VNITO Conference 2017 in search for solution to IT workforce


On Oct 19th, The Conference of Vietnam Information Technology Outsourcing 2017 (VNITO Conference 2017) took place in Ho Chi Minh city. This year, the organizing board put effort in promoting Vietnam ITO with the message: “Vietnam, Asia Tier 1 Delivery destination”.

Lack of workforce to fully takes advantage of the big chance

According to report at conference, there are more than 600 thousands people working in IT, creating turnover of 107 millions USD (2012-2016). Based on 2016 Ranking of Cushman & Wakefield, the company specialized in market research, Vietnam took first place (on location) for Business process outsourcing (BPO).

Mr Nguyen Cong Ai, Head of Strategy Group – KPMG Vietnam, said that, via research, Vietnam ITO get high rated with the advantage of strategic position. But experts also underlined the revolution of technology will change everythings, from human to competition. Therefore Vietnam IT workforce need to adapt, focusing more on skills, becoming specialists in their fields. Vietnamese possess many advantages, such as the interested in technology, mathematics savvy, quick to learn, dynamic and young population.

“Improving IT workforce is a very important task of Vietnam and this task demands time. IT education needs more attention and need a clear orientation for development by the state and private education and training institution”, Mr Ai expressed

Though there are still positive aspects, but in general, Vietnam IT workforce needs to improve much more.

According to Ms. Nguyen Phuong Mai, Managing Director of Navigos Search:

“Vietnam IT workforce needs good foreign language skill, especially English and Japanese, since most of ITO clients are from coutries using these two languages”.

Besides, they need to sharpen their soft skills, such as presentation, expressing ideas, persuasion, time and progress management…Besides, practical experience is one problem that Vietnam IT workforce needs to acquire more.

Solution for the IT workforce

How to better Vietnam IT workforce is the main concern of education and training institutes in Vietnam. This matter has collected great attention of SaigonTech managing board – the official affiliate of Houston Community College, Texas, US (HCC). Coursework offered by HCC at SaigonTech was approved by SACSCOC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges). The IT training program is always up to date, highly applicable that helps student accumulate knowledge, soft skill and interesting experience. SaigonTech students always have the chance to practice English since this is the official communication language at the SaigonTech.

Experts exchange the problems and solutions for Vietnam IT workforce

SaigonTech, VNITO Alliance, Quang Trung Software City, HCMC Computer Association together established Information Technology Workforce Solution Center (ISC Quang Trung) with the hope of bringing Vietnamese students updated technological knowledge, foreign language and soft skill competence, experience from practical projects and customer service skill.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Anh Thu, Chancellor of SaigonTech said:

 “ISC Quang Trung was not established for only SaigonTech students but also for students from other universities. We expect to bring students practical experience from real projects. At ISC Quang Trung, there are 7 majors , each major contains 360 hours of training and practice.”

To solve obstacles from practical experience, language barrier, at the same time, to improve soft skills, teamwork of Vietnam IT workforce, besides efforts of those very IT personels, there is necessity to have the cooperation of IT companies, especially, education and training institutions. On this aspect, SaigonTech is a pioneer and has created positive impacts.
